Tara believes in socially and environmentally responsible entrepreneurship. That belief is not a tagline. It is built into how the business operates at a financial level, before taxes, before business expenses, before groceries.
Every month, a minimum of 3% of gross monthly income is given to one or more of these organizations. This is not a rounding-error donation or something that happens when things are going well. It is a non-negotiable, automated line item in how the business runs.
This means that any purchase you make here contributes to those organizations too. So thank you for that.
These organizations receive monthly contributions from this business. They may vary slightly from month to month, but the commitment to give does not.
You do not need to be at a certain revenue level to start. There is a lot you can do right where you are, within your own business, right now.
Find an organization that is near and dear to you, that has helped you or someone you love, that does important work you know you cannot do yourself, or that aligns with your business values. Make it personal.
Set up an automated monthly donation of an amount you will hardly notice, even if it is just $20 to start. Then make it non-negotiable and do not touch it. Automation removes the decision from the equation.
Follow them on social media, read their articles, or get their newsletter to keep in touch with how your money is put to work. This keeps the giving meaningful instead of abstract.
Run promotions or flash sales on your business anniversary where a portion of income goes to charity. Ask clients to round up their final bill. Facilitate a fundraiser within your community. Giving is more powerful when it is shared.
But do not keep the extra for yourself. Add on five to ten percent to your price and commit to pay that extra forward. Your clients are often happy to pay a little more when they know it goes somewhere meaningful.
Once or twice a year, analyze your income and decide if you can increase your donation or add a new organization. Tax time is a good natural checkpoint. Let your giving grow with your business.
We all want to make a difference, but it is hard to donate time or money if you are hurting for both. So do what you can with what you have now, even if it seems like hardly enough, and commit to do more as you continue to break through.
